Twelve rams and forty-eight ewes (½ Finland x ½ Rahmani) were used to studythe possibility of using GnRH or Melatonin to improve the reproductive efficiencyunder hot summer conditions. The animals were divided into three equal and similargroups. The 1st group of rams was subjected to intramuscularly injection of salinesolution (0.9% NaCI) as a control group. The 2nd group was intramuscularly injectedwith GnRH and the 3rd groups received Melatonin orally.GnRH treatment improved (P<0.05) the heat-stressed rams libido, mating activity, fertility, serum testosterone, semen-ejaculate volume and total sperm output than inthe control. Meanwhile sperm motility, dead spermatozoa, abnormalities, acrosomalintegrity and sperm cell concentration did not change appreciably as a function of thistreatment.Treatment heat stressed rams with Melatonin increased (P<0.05) mating activityand fertility but the other reproductive performance traits did not differ than thecontrol.

ABESTRACTThe present work was conducted on Finnish Landrace-Rahmani crossbred(1/2F.1/2R) pregnant ewes and their produced lambs. The experimental work startedin April 1996 (starting at the 4th month of pregnancy) and lasted for 11 months (by the1st wool cut of lambs, at 9 months of age).Ewes were divided into almost similar two groups according to their age and bodyweight. The group I was used as a control group and was fed according to therequirements recommended by the AOAC (1984) and received 1.0 kg concentratefeed mixture (CFM) + 0.5 kg clover hay/head/day. Group II, Treatment group inaddition to the same feeding and managerial procedures followed for control groupand free choice minerals mixture blocks (Bichema, Egypt) were allowed for ewes upto weaning their lambs. The means values of plasma calcium (Ca), phosphorous (P), Magnesium (Mg),copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) and in treated ewes in relation to the controlgroup were evaluated and statically differences between them were estimated. Themeans of Ca, P, Mg, and Co were higher significantly [(9.48, 4.79, 2.92 mg/100 ml)and 0.10 g/100 ml] in treated group vs. [(8.65, 3.91 and 2.08 mg/100 ml) and 0.03g/100 ml] in control group, respectively in ewes. In lambs, the means of Ca, P, Mg,Zn and Co were higher significantly [(11.31, 6.71, 4.64 mg/100 ml) and 84.42 and0.14 g/100 ml] in treated group vs. [(9.23, 4.56, 2.79 mg/100ml)] and 70.57 and 0.09g/100 ml] in control group, respectively. In lambs, the mineral supplementation effects on hemoglobin (12.72 vs. 10.28g/100 ml,), live body weight (22.17 kg) vs. 20.96 kg in control and daily body weightwere 135.95 vs. 132.97 kg in mineral supplementation group vs. control group, respectively were significant. The importance of minerals supplied to ewes and lambs were reflected from thepresent experimental results.

Clays in animal nutrition : 6. Effect of feeding pelleted complete……………..

SUMMARYTwenty four Ossimi lambs averaged 14.5 kg and aged 16 weeks were used to study theeffect of 4 pelleted complete feeds (PCF) on digestibility, growth performance and woolcharacteristics. The lambs were divided into 4 groups (6 animals in each). The animal groupswere fed on PCF without urea or tafta (C), 2% urea without tafla (U), 2% urea + 3% tafla(U1T) and 2.5% urea + 3% tafla (U2T). Growth trial lasted for 24 weeks which were dividedinto 3 successive periods. By the end of the growth trial, 3 animals from each group weretaken for digestibility trials. The main results were, the crude fibre (CF) digestibility of U2Twas significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of the other rations, while the other nutrientsdigestibility was not significantly affected with different rations. The group U had the lowestvalue of daily body gain (DBG) while the group U2T had the highest value. The yield ofclean wool of the groups fed urea and tafla (U1T and U2T) was significantly higher than thatof groups U or C. The wool quality of the groups U1T and U2T was better than groups U or C. Conclusively, adding tafla clay in pelleted complete feed improved growth performanceand wool yield and its characteristics. Moreover, U2T was the most economic diet among alltested ones.

In Egyptian Suffolk (70-90 % UK Suffolk. 10 – 30% Ossimi sheep) ewes, blood serum proteins examined for biochemical polymorphism showed thatthe highly significant (P<0.01) associations were between the Bovine-serumAlbumin (Alb) marker gene alleles Aa1, Aa2 and the highest values of each ofage at first lambing and lambs weight at weaning, Ab1, Ab2 and fertility(number of lambs produced /number of ewes exposed during the breedingseason) and A01, A02 and lambing interval. Alb alleles Ab1, Ab2 & A01, A02 andAb1, Ab2 were significantly (P<0.01) associated with the lowest age at firstlambing, fertility and lambing interval, respectively. In Nubian (Zaraibi) goat does, plasma proteins showed that allele Cb ofCarbonic Anhydrase Erythrocyte marker gene was associated (P<0.05) withthe shortest age at first kidding. The allele Ia of Trepsinogen Inhibitor markergene was associated (P<0.01) with the highest values of litter size and litterweight at birth and at weaning. The allele Aa of Albumin marker gene wasassociated (P<0.01) with the highest values of kilograms produced at birthand at weaning/ lifetime of doe. The allele Pc of Immunoglobulin P markergene was associated (P<0.05) with the lowest value of abortion and theallele Pb of the same marker gene was associated (P<0.05) with the lowestvalue of mortality rate.In buffaloes, examination of plasma proteins of male calves and plasmaand milk proteins of cows showed that the Immunoglobulin G allele Ga wasassociated (P<0.01) with the highest values of daily milk yield, while theeffects of the studied other marker genes on most the studied traits were notsignificant. The beneficial results may suggest that marker assisted selection could becarried out at a very early age on marker gene types for improvement oflocal animals studied traits, since such marker genotypes could be scored atvery early age, which may save time, effort and costs.
